Grub Talks… And why it’s important we do too.

ree

Bringing people together over good food and honest conversation isn’t just a recipe for a great night out—it can be a lifeline. At Grub Talks Swansea, men gather once a month to check in, share a meal and support each other through life’s ups and downs. Here’s why these moments matter, and how our friends at Hill’s Brecon recently helped raise vital funds for the cause.

What Is Grub Talks?

Grub Talks Swansea began in 2023 when a few friends realised that sometimes chatting about feelings is easier when you’ve got a plate of food—and some banter—to break the ice. What started as three lads around a table has grown into a community of over 28 members and 60 in the groups, their monthly meet-ups regularly draw 16+ attendees.

  • No pressure, no cost (beyond your meal)

  • Safe, welcoming space for real conversation

  • Kickabouts and socials between monthly events

Membership is just £5/month—all of which gets returned to you in meal credit—so that nobody misses out for financial reasons. Funds also subsidise first-time guests and members experiencing tough months.

Why Talking Matters

  • Breaks down stigma. Talking openly about mental health helps normalise what many men struggle to express.

  • Builds connection. Regular check-ins foster friendships beyond the meetup table.

  • Offers practical support. Members share resources, encouragement and, when needed, a financial safety net for someone going through a hard time.

Food is the catalyst—it brings people in. Conversation is the reward.

Nomad’s Role in the Conversation & Hill’s Brecon’s Gutsy Burger Fundraiser

One of the highlights of our Wednesday pop-ups was the Grub Talks Pepperoni Burger, crafted exclusively by the team at Hill’s Brecon. For every burger sold, £1 was donated directly to Grub Talks Swansea, and with over 100 Pepperoni Burgers throughout June, they raised both funds and awareness! This initiative not only put a delicious twist on our usual fare but also reminded everyone that every bite can make a difference.

The Impact

Thanks to events like these and ongoing support from partners, Grub Talks can:

  • Subsidise meals for members in need

  • Invest in mental health training and resources

  • Book inclusive venues where everyone feels welcome

Your participation—whether as a diner, donor or simply someone who helps spread the word—keeps the conversation going.

Join The Lads

  • Next Grub Talks Meetup: The lads always meet up on Wednesdays or Thursdays, find out the next meet: grubtalks.co.uk

Together, let’s keep breaking bread—and breaking down barriers. After all, sometimes the simplest act of talking over a plate is the most important one we can do.
